Should children do homework in the Christmas holidays?

I’m actually a big fan of homework. I think the school-related work children do at home can be important consolidation or extension of what they have learnt at school. Time spent reviewing work at home can provide the valuable opportunity for reflection and reinforcement. Sometimes if your child’s interest is sparked by something at school, they can find the space to do further reading and research in their own time, including on the internet, which can extend their learning and...

Help - I've got homework!

Homework is a bit like riding a bike. You have to practice to get it right but, once you’ve mastered the skill, you never forget how to do it.
Like it or not, homework is part of school life – or should be. Yes, the teaching day ends around mid afternoon and young people need downtime to re-charge their batteries. No, that does not mean lessons should be forgotten until class the following day.

So Heathfields Primary School in Bolton have added blogging to their curriculum, even for five year olds. Of course a little worry could be a good thing – it could ensure they take a serious approach to their study and focus at school rather than waste time. But another finding, that they feel pressure from home, is rather more concerning. Once again, this could be a good thing if this “pressure” is simply support and encouragement –...

Hallelujah! Once again research confirms common sense. This time it transpires that so-called “pushy parents” have a beneficial effect on their children’s educational outcomes. Researchers at Leeds and Leicester universities found that pupils have more positive attitudes to school and higher academic achievement if their parents make an effort to help them succeed. Parents who regularly attend parent-teacher evenings, who read to their children and who...

Homework - Pollutant or fertiliser?
The thing about homework is that it’s supposed to help children. Help them to learn, to understand, to absorb and to use the skills and information that they are being taught in class. So why does popular children’s author Eleanor Updale think it is polluting family life?
It’s certainly true that too many children, particularly girls, spend too long over their homework. And that it can become an outlet for parents’ anxiety and/or competitiveness. I remember feeling desperate as I tried to...
