Q. Your name?

Elizabeth Tuley

Q. Your school?

St. Mary’s School, Cambridge

Q. Your current occupation?

Student, reading Veterinary Science at Bristol University

Q. Your favourite subject at school?

Biology, due to a natural interest combined with excellent teaching

Q. Your best and worst memory of your school days?

My fondest memories include singing with the school choirs Allegro and Cantore in the wonderful termly music concerts and spending time with my Year 7 form as a Form Prefect.
I don’t really have any bad memories – the only negative image that springs to mind is the inevitable nervousness before any public exam.

Q. What or who inspired you to follow your career?

My uncle is a vet and helping out at his surgery was an inspiration to me. Good science teaching and interview preparation also helped me to achieve my goal of being accepted to study veterinary science.

Q. What do you feel you gained by attending a girls’ only school?

I made some amazing friends and developed my confidence, maturity and independence in a very supportive environment, as well as being able to focus on my academic goals.

Q. Any advice for parents choosing a school for their daughter?

Visit the schools that you are considering and observe the general atmosphere and the students at work. Do you see laughter, confidence and inspiring teaching? Academic reputation is important, but good pastoral care will help your daughter really flourish.

Q. Any advice for girls planning their university and/or career choices?

Doing something because you truly love it is so much more fulfilling than choosing a subject for any other reason. Get some work experience to see if your dream career is really what you expect so as to avoid being disappointed later.
