From the many myths about independent girls' schools: hot-houses, bitchy girls, superior swots, man-hating... to all the positives: happy places where girls feel special, form life-long friendships and succeed. What's the truth?

Lucy Telford

Q. Your name?

Lucy Telford

Q. Your school?

St Mary’s Hall, Brighton

Q. Your current occupation?

Brand Manager, Yves Saint Laurent Beauté

Q. Your favourite subject at school?

English

Q. Your best and worst memory of your school days?

Worst – Maths lessons (I was in Division 3!)- As a boarder, occasional home sickness : particularly in my first & last years- Lacrosse in freezing winter months!

Best – Participating in school plays- My Classics teacher Mrs Thomason- Balmy summer evenings within the school grounds.

Q. What or who inspired you to follow your career?

I always knew I wanted to work in London, in a creative industry (maths & science being my weaker subjects) but I didn’t have a career path mapped out until my final year of university. With the help & advice of my course tutor, I decided upon a career in luxury Marketing & never looked back.

Q. What do you feel you gained by attending a girls’ only school?

Confidence within my peer group. Consistent encouragement in the classroom. A really good education with no male distractions (!).

Q. Any advice for parents choosing a school for their daughter?

Consider not only the quality of education in your daughter’s next school but also the quality of life.

Q. Any advice for girls planning their university and/or career choices?

Choose to study at university a subject you enjoy, and be aware that plenty of the more traditional degrees such as English, History, Biology etc are as much a springboard for careers in Marketing, PR, Media etc as specialised business qualification courses.

Q. Any other comments you would like to make?

Make the most of your school days : they fly by!
