About girls' schools

From the many myths about independent girls' schools: hot-houses, bitchy girls, superior swots, man-hating... to all the positives: happy places where girls feel special, form life-long friendships and succeed. What's the truth?

Independent Schools Council

The Independent Schools Council (ISC) represents 1,280 independent schools educating more than 500,000 children. ISC schools are accredited by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) and the Head of each ISC school is a member of one of their Heads’ Associations.

ISC schools cover the entire academic range. They also cover a wide social range, with nearly a third of children receiving help with their school fees.

The ISC’s Parent Zone is an online resource designed for both experienced parents and new-comers to the Independent school sector. This area of the ISC website is packed with hints and tips about the independent sector as well as practical school search advice to help you find an ISC accredited independent school, often referred to as ‘Private school’.

The Parent Zone lets you

  • Search for ISC schools based on your specific criteria as well as for School Open Days in your area
  • Learn about school fee assistance such as bursaries and scholarships
  • Find out about boarding schools as well as day schools
  • Discover the flexibility that Independent schools offer through the different curricula available such as A-Levels, Pre-U, IB, IGCSEs, GCSEs etc.
