Who's greener - you or your daughter? Poll results...
A convincing 69% of MyDaughter visitors who voted believe that they are greener than their daughters! One family who are actively engaged in the green debate sent us this exchange to summarise the difference of opinions in their house…
J (10yrs) – I am greener than my Mum because I always make sure I turn off the TV and computer after I finish using them. I always contribute to school ‘walk and cycle to school’ days and I want to join the eco friendly council as well. I want to be able to recycle more things by bothering to put items of rubbish in the recycle bin. I try to cycle to places rather than driving.
Mum – (** yrs and going grey rapidly!) – I am greener than my daughter because I always turn light off when leaving a room. I recycle as much household waste as possible, including composting veg. waste, paper, cardboard, plastics and bottles. I try to wash clothes when they need it and not on the basis of one short wear and they are automatically in the washing machine. I wonder if my daughter can match me on clothes and light switches?
J – Mum, you are seriously insane and by the way who left your bedroom lights on the other day? And who left your computer on for TWO NIGHTS RUNNING. As for clothes, at least half the washes are your clothes. As for me I wear my clothes for at least two days before washing (except for underwear of course), and I never leave lights on on purpose.
Mum – If you are going to save the planet you can’t afford to be forgetful. It’s no excuse. It was your father who left the computer on all night!! And let’s not discuss the pile of clothes on your chair in the bedroom ….. Meanwhile, I also take short, effective showers, not long ones taking ages over each shampoo and conditioner moment. And my baths are not very deep soaking baths. Water is a scarce resource in our world, and it takes energy from fossil fuels to heat it.
J – Blaa, Blaa, and mum, the bigger the pile of clothes in my bedroom the less washing I am doing. My baths are not deep; they just look deep when I get into them, ever heard of something called science? Give me a break on the light front, I am trying!!
Mum – you are always right, sweetie!!! That’s enough, J. It’s bedtime …
