School head Mr Mark Steed
Berkhamsted Girls is small, friendly 11-16 school of some 320 girls. It is an increasingly rare type of school. It manages to achieve outstanding examination grades, but has not abandoned its commitment to a broader view of education. The school offers a diverse curriculum at GCSE, taught in small class sizes, and maintains very high academic standards. The school prides itself in outstanding levels of pastoral care. Berkhamsted Girls does not have year or form tutor groups, rather each girl belongs to a House. This structure provides both a social base and close academic supervision and support; as well as allowing girls to mix and get to know other girls across the year groups.
Music, drama, art, sport, community service and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme still play an important part in the lives of the young people here. Although a small school, Berkhamsted Girls benefits from an infrastructure of a much larger organisation, including a 550-seat theatre/concert venue, a six lane 25m swimming pool and a sports hall, all on site. Lacrosse is the major game and is played in both the Michaelmas and Hilary terms.
Berkhamsted Girls is one part of Berkhamsted School, comprising a co-educational Prep school, single sex boys and girls 11-16, and a co-educational Sixth Form. The Berkhamsted Girls and Berkhamsted Boys are taught separately on different sites, but share in academic trips and visits and in some co-curricular activities, such as the chamber choir, orchestras and the combined cadet force.
