Blackheath High School (which opened in 1880) is a selective, independent day school for girls aged three – eighteen. Situated in Blackheath, South East London, it is a member of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST). The school aims to nurture an enjoyment of learning, to foster an ethos which helps produce confident, responsible young women, and to provide opportunities for every girl to fulfil her potential in an atmosphere of mutual respect. Girls benefit from all the advantages of a small school in terms of care, support and positive relationships, while having the opportunities and facilities of a far larger school. Students enjoy small teaching groups and can take advantage of an impressive range of opportunities both in and out of the classroom. Teaching is based on giving the girls exciting, informative and well-structured lessons and projects. Our girls learn Mandarin and Latin; access the latest ICT, including personal laptops for every Sixth Former; perform in our own 345-seat theatre or dance studio and play tennis on one of our 13 tennis courts.
As a school, we are interested in what allows girls to develop in confidence so our students flourish in an all-girl environment, and the school’s distinctive, holistic approach to girls’ education lays a strong emphasis on their health and welfare. Rated ‘outstanding’ in our recent inspection (February 2008), the 600 pupils enjoy considerable success in gaining places at prestigious universities, while achieving standards well above the national average.
