Casterton School
Type Boarding
Age range 3–18
School head Mrs Maxine Lucas
Casterton is one of the oldest and most established boarding schools for girls in the UK. The Brönte sisters attended the school in its very early years but, although it is steeped in history, the school was and is a far cry from the ‘Lowood’ portrayed in Jane Eyre! Today, we exist to open up unlimited opportunities for girls in a secure, modern, forward-looking environment.
Located in the majestic hills of the Lake District at a point where Yorkshire, Cumbria and Lancashire meet amidst a beautiful backdrop of fells and huge skies, Casterton educates girls from 3 to 18. Despite being one of the most academically successful schools in the UK and regularly appearing in the upper reaches of the national league tables, we believe that the kind of person you are is as important as the qualifications you gain. Consequently, our emphasis is on providing a large range of opportunities for girls to become healthy, confident, accomplished young women both in and out of the classroom. As The Good Schools Guide 2008 states, at Casterton ‘it is cool to succeed’. Music, drama, sport, horse riding, outdoor pursuits, clubs and societies contribute as much as our academic programme to the development of the personality traits we value highly: intellectual character, courage, strength and creativity.
The school welcomes both boarders and day pupils. All of the girls benefit enormously from the fact that, as well as being a school, it is also a home to many staff and pupils. For a closer look at us, see www.castertonschool.co.uk
