Church High School, Newcastle
Age range 3–18
School head Mrs Joy Gatenby
The fact that so many students have chosen to follow their education with us here at Church High is undoubtedly a reflection of our strong ethos and the value which we place on a broad education and the personal development of each and every girl who is entrusted into our care.
Parents have actively sought out our school to sign up for an education and all-round approach to life which will enable their children to really make their voices heard in the world, and often, as soon as they come in for a visit, they know that the Church High girl is the epitome of their aspirations for their own daughter. A tour of the school with a Sixth Form student will then cement their first impressions.
Church High staff gain immense satisfaction knowing that working closely with every girl as an individual does enable her to achieve her best and that our pupils could not have a better experience, nor gain better results, elsewhere.
One of our 2011 Sixth Form leavers about to embark on her university career at Durham University, summed up the feelings of her contemporaries when she wrote: “I have been given endless opportunities to develop my personal skills and can see how my confidence has grown over the last couple of years. I have loved every minute of my time at Church High, and especially Sixth Form. Church High has all the characteristics of a great school; a fantastic family atmosphere, brilliant teaching, amazing friends, great facilities, but for me, to be so happy and confident and able to be my true self in a school environment, is the best quality about Church High.”
In the classroom at Church High, our academic results at all levels and for all abilities are outstanding. Church High continues to achieve some of the very best academic results in the region.
In 2011 no less than 50 per cent of all A Level results were at A* and A grades, smashing the national average of 27 per cent and resulting in an all-time high.
In addition three quarters (75 per cent) of all results gained were A* to B grades and over a third of all girls achieved three or more A* and A grades.
At GCSE an outstanding 63 per cent of GCSE grades were awarded at A* and A level, and over a third (37 per cent) of girls received 9 or more A* and A grades.
Perhaps it is, indeed, this personal level of support we give to the individual student which makes Church High such a special place. We can respond on an individual basis to all abilities and tailor teaching to the needs of our pupils.
The Church High experience from Day Nursery to Sixth Form is, quite simply, exceptional. Church High girls enjoy happy, rewarding years; make great and lasting friendships; develop a diverse range of talents and interests, and achieve levels of academic success that could not be surpassed elsewhere.
So why do so many girls want to study at Church High? Well, perhaps the question should really be: why wouldn’t they?
