Overview

Downe House is situated in 110 acres of wooded grounds, five miles from Newbury and within easy reach of Heathrow Airport. 

In addition to the regular subjects, our A level curriculum includes Classical Civilisation, Business Studies, Sports Science, Politics, Economics, Photography and History of Art as well as General Studies and Critical Thinking. Leith’s ‘Food & Wine’ Certificate is also offered to girls in the Sixth Form. Girls are prepared for GCSE, AS and A Level examinations, with all girls going on to University or some other form of Higher Education.

All girls in the Lower Fourth, aged 12, spend a term at the School’s House in France, in the Dordogne, to study French and increase European awareness.

There are many extra curricular activities, including a variety of musical instruments, Fencing, Drama, Sub Aqua, Pottery, Woodwork, Photography, Art, Craft, Singing, Speech & Drama Training, Cookery, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Rowing, Model Making and Self-defence. There is a regular programme of varied Weekend Activities, including the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. Expeditions abroad such as World Challenge, which develops leadership qualities, are offered alongside Young Enterprise which offers an insight into business practice in the UK.
