Overview

Durham High School for Girls is a friendly, caring community based on Christian values where every individual counts. Our size and ethos make it possible for each girl to feel she really belongs and make lasting friendships. Here it is possible for every girl to achieve her best in every part of the curriculum- academic, physical and creative. However we want every girl not only to learn to develop her own talents but also to be aware of her own limitations and be able to celebrate the achievements of others. We hope that each girl will enjoy every aspect of school life and that this enjoyment stays with them for the rest of their lives. Every girl here also learns to look outwards to the needs of others. In addition to our charity efforts and voluntary service, the school is closely associated with the work of the Durham-Lesotho Link. Each year Sixth Formers visit Lesotho on a HIV/AIDS peer educators programme and to work with orphans. This has greatly enriched the life of the school in many ways, including giving some of our pupils the opportunity to help deliver our PSHE programme. The Lesotho trip is just one of many leadership opportunities that we provide for our pupils. We aim to give a broad educational experience. Extra-curricular activities here are many and diverse, from Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Young Enterprise, to Horse-Riding, Fencing and Cheerleading. We are hugely fortunate to be able to access the rich spiritual and cultural heritage of Durham with its magnificent cathedral and fine University.
