Harrogate Ladies' College
Age range 2–18
School head Mrs Sylvia Brett
Harrogate Ladies’ College has been educating girls to become confident, well educated, thoughtful young women since 1893; we still do it but in a very different way. The ethos of the school remains the same, with a strong emphasis on pastoral care, but these days the destination of our leavers is university, with girls going to the most prestigious universities world wide. Getting them on this journey starts at 11, when the foundation stones in the core subjects are laid and the girls are encouraged to explore different subjects to see where their interests lie. The joy of a small school (330), small classes and specialist teachers is that every girl can be looked at as an individual and encouraged to really discover her potential. Academic results are very, very good.
What goes on outside the classroom is equally important and the girls participate in a diverse range of activities from Art to Drama from Chess to Amateur Radio, from Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to Young Enterprise. There is a tremendous range of sport on offer and whether you work towards representing your country, or just want fun, you are equally encouraged.
The school is on a 20 acre site on the attractive Duchy estate only 10 minutes from the heart of Harrogate. The school has just finished a programme of major refurbishments including extensive work on the boarding houses, the installation of internet access and for all sixth formers studies and bedrooms and upgrading the computer system. Further major works are planned.
