Overview

James Allen’s Girls’ School (JAGS) has a very broad social and cultural mix, and particularly encourages girls to take responsibility and to become actively involved in the community. The 2008 inspection report praised not only the high quality teaching and academic standards, but also the outstanding pastoral care and excellent extra-curricular provision. The school’s examination results are consistently among the best in the country. Fifteen girls won commendations from the Examination Boards in 2008 for being among the top ten highest scoring candidates in a variety of A level and GCSE subjects in 2008. Twenty six girls gained places at Oxford or Cambridge in the 2010 entrance cycle.

Committed to all-round excellence, JAGS is particularly renowned for its art, drama, music and sports. The 22-acre site includes a theatre, drama studios, swimming pool, ATP, dance studio, fitness suite, 13 science labs and many specialist teaching rooms. A new dining hall, café, additional drama studio and classroom block opened in January 2009. Over 30 concerts are staged each year, encompassing pop, rock, jazz and classical music. A new James Allen’s Community Music Centre is currently being planned which will be an exceptional facility for both the school and the community.

Easily accessible by train and coach, JAGS offers scholarships and assisted places (means-tested up to 100%) at 11+ and 16+. The school also has an outstanding Preparatory section, JAPS, which takes girls aged 4-11 years.
