Life at Manor House is not just about what goes on in the classroom, vital though that is. We provide our girls with opportunities to learn in a variety of spheres. Our GCSE girls have performed Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” at Leatherhead theatre; our Year 3 girls have visited an allotment with a local gardener and our Year 1 pupils spend time learning to cook in our spacious food technology room. Our academic success is built on our high levels of pastoral care. Staff get to know the girls very well and can spot difficulties as they arise. We develop close links with parents, enabling us to support the girls through the ups and downs of friendships and family life. We actively promote links between senior and prep students and we have a network of “Supportive Friends” – older students trained to help any girl who needs a listening ear. Once girls feel happy and secure pastorally this confidence is transferred to their academic work. Year after year our value added tracking shows that our girls achieve results that are significantly above those predicted. There is a danger that a small, nurturing school can become a cocoon against the real world – not at Manor House. Our girls are given many opportunities to help others less fortunate than they are – Manor House is one of very few schools who continue to support the work of Queen Mary’s Clothing Guild and as the photo shows, all of these community projects are undertaken with a lively sense of fun.
